We do things everyday that won’t scale. Whether it is responding to social media interactions or taking that extra 30-60 minutes with a prospect or customer building a deeper relationship. Sometimes we just have to do things that are unscalable.
Trying Something Unscalable
My birthday was this past week on November 14th. Yes, it was a good one and you only get to turn 48 once! #MadeIt
Earlier this week, I decided that I was going to do the unscalable. I was going to personally respond to EVERY #HappyBirthday Tweet, Facebook post, and LinkedIn message.
Now, I’m not Tim Ferris or Gary Vaynerchuk or Matt Ryan. I don’t have +1M followers and I didn’t have thousands of interactions. (Thankfully!)
However, I do have a number of contacts and many of them reached out to share a congratulation or connect.
I am happy to say that I think I responded *personally* to each and every one! Many were a simple “Thank You”; a lot were more personalized responses asking about their families or a recent event in their lives.
Many responded back. Some might have been surprised. I hope that it put a quick smile on their face or triggered the same feeling of acknowledgement in them that their #HappyBirthday did to me.
If you are among those who reached out, let me again say “Thank You”. It is genuinely appreciated.
If you did and I overlooked responding to you, I am truly sorry. The exercise was just an exercise in getting outside my comfort zone and patterns, but there was an underlying expectation (at least from me).
Whether it is unscalable or not, I wanted those who took their time to wish me a “Happy Birthday” to know that I appreciated it and it didn’t go overlooked.
Challenge
Back to doing the unscalable, what personal interaction do you need to do to communicate to someone else how important they are to you?
Go do it!
