Don’t Get Comfortable

Often, we seek satisfaction and to be comfortable. Often, the people wanting change are often those most opposed to it.

Usually, when you hear someone say “Something needs to change”, what they really mean is “<Someone, not them> needs to change Something”.

If they said it to you, then they often mean “You need to change!”

Being comfortable financially, physically, spiritually, in your relationships, etc is cause for caution. Comfort can lead to our biggest problems because it presents us with few reasons to change. Without a motivation to try different things, we stagnate (and often experience decline). Even if our performance remains the same, competition (having the motivation to change) will often overtake us.

For this reason, winning sports teams continually review their game plans and processes to find ways to stay ahead of their opponents.

Specifically…..

  • If you are comfortable at work, you are possibly not delivering the value that you could to your employer. If that is the case, you are probably not getting paid what you are truly worth either.
  • If your faith seems easy, you are possibly not spreading its message as effectively as you could. In some circumstances, you may not even be a very good representative of it!
  • If you are comfortable with your schedule, you may not be reaching your full potential. If you often think “I don’t have time to [X]”, then maybe you should reassess your priorities, schedule, and habits.

The key takeaway is that we should never get too comfortable that we stop learning and growing. Time advances and you are typically either moving forward or losing ground.
