Sirus Digital Newsletter – Edition 110

Quote from Sundar Pichai - "I have always held the view that you tend to go wrong focusing too much on competition. Big companies, particularly, fail because they stumble internally."
It is easy to blame external factors - markets, competitors, political leaders, etc. However, as Google CEO, Sundar Pichai notes, most failures (in business and other endeavors) are caused by internal factors often clearly within our control.

Fall Sportsball Season Is Upon Us!

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, September 12th, 2022.

Shout out to one of my college buddies for his entertaining label for our favorite fall time sink. If you know David Smith, you have no doubt seen his fun posts about “Sportsball” (i.e. Football).

Yes, he is another fan of your defending National Champion and currently 2-and-0 Georgia Bulldogs. (Note: Even if you are not a football fan, some of his other posts – like “Who will sit next to David?” (on an airplane) – are classic.)

But yes, the days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler, and the seasons for professional and collegiate football are underway.

For some (like the aforementioned UGA), it is a continuation of previous successes. For others, like Nebraska (who have reportedly fired their coach, Scott Frost, after two weeks), things are not starting well.

On the professional front, my Atlanta Falcons found yet another way to lose a game that they led by 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Regardless of how your team is fairing (sorry ScotC – tough loss at home by your Gators), it is exciting to see players on the fields & fans in the stands.

Here’s to another fun season!

-D

P.S. Interestingly, while football is getting started, baseball (especially in the NL East) is especially hot! Your World Champion Atlanta Braves have now chased down those dastardly NY Mets from 10 1/2 games back earlier in the summer. If nothing else, the final 20-or-so games are going to be interesting..

You can read details of the complete interview in Inc. Magazine here, but the premise is succinct – We have much more control over our own internal success factors than most of us recognize (or are willing to admit).

While you may not control the cultural environment in which you operate or the business environment in which you find yourself, those things solely within your control (attitude, effort, and a positive outlook) have as much or more influence on outcomes as those you do not.

If you are not getting the results that you seek, take a moment to look at what factors within yourself or your organization might be producing your current outcomes and what things you can change to achieve different ones!

Make today better & stop investing energy in relitigating the past or worrying about the future. Win today & let the rest take care of itself!

  • Google Helpful Content Update
    • It is a common refrain. Search Engines rank content based on its value to users. As algorithms continue to evolve, our primary goal should be answering and meeting expectations for users. If you are developing content with the goal “to rank”, you are condemning yourself to a perpetual chase of a constantly-moving target.

  • Content Engine That Drives Revenue
    • Yes, our content objective has to be providing user value, but the end result we are seeking is Revenue (through the development of an audience & conversion of them into customers).
    • Creating a repeatable process for that exercise is a key element for your success.

  • Google Cutting “Perks”
    • It is a good tell when big companies start reining in their expenses. In Google’s case (along with Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, etc), it is likely that the current directives to limit spending on travel & other perks will soon manifest in staff reductions as well. Regardless of the industry, the same “rising tide that lifts all boats” can just as easily take them lower.
    • Note: Downturns and recessions often afford as many (or better) opportunities as economic expansions. The important key is preparedness and being ready to take advantage of the opportunities that arise!
