Change That Keeps Changing
Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, October 10th, 2022.
The last time we connected, I was still recovering from my Ibuprofen-popping week as a non-professional landscaper spreading 13 cubic yards of mulch over 4-5 days. While I am satisfied with the outcome and look of our yard, I have no excitement about repeating the exercise any time soon!
As finishing that week, it seemed like the “Fall Crush” went into full swing. There are a number of different events and activities going on which make this one of the busiest times of the year in our household.
The good news is that we are nearing the mid-December days when I usually take some much-needed time off to spend with family, friends, and interests that I have unfortunately been overlooking.
How might this affect this communication?
I’m not sure, but I think it is definitely going to evolve going forward.
- I’ll probably be a little less rigid about schedules so delivery days might not as predictable, but that may also provide some flexibility in what and how often we connect. I will probably keep sending interactions like this one with thoughts, quotes, and links of interest, but I might also send smaller, more direct, and specific communications as well.
- There are some different things that I’m learning and others that I’m doing. Where valuable, you’re going to see more from me about those too!
- I enjoy interacting directly so be on the lookout as some new opportunities manifest there too.
If there are things that you would like to see or hear, I always appreciate your feedback. Ultimately, this is successful when it is bringing value and enjoyment for us all!
Hope you have a great week

Unrelated Sports Mention
- UGA continues their undefeated streak (moving to 6-0) coming from their 42-10 victory over Auburn. While Georgia looked unmotivated at times against Kent State & Missouri (as well as against Auburn early on), the end result was another victory. I’ve joked in the past that Kirby Smart can often be a “Coach Killer” because it has seemed over the past few years that coaches get fired a lot after their games against his Bulldogs. Unfortunately for Auburn’s Brian Harsin, I think the outcome was already determined even before his inexplicable attempt of a Fake Punt on his side of the 50 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Next Up: Vandy
- The Atlanta Braves completed their comeback from 10.5 games behind in June with their three-game sweep of the NY Mets in their next-to-last series of the regular season. That outcome set the Braves up for a 1st round bye and sent the Mets to the Wildcard round.
- The Falcons lost to Tom Brady & his Tampa Bay Buccaneers today 21-15. Overall, if you’d have told Falcons fans that they would be 2-3 at this point having had a realistic opportunity to win all three (3) of the other games, we’d have taken that every day (and twice on Sunday). As it is, the team looks to be a little better than expected & it’s frankly a little disappointing that we didn’t win at least one or two of those other losses. In the end, the Falcons aren’t a team talented enough to be “contenders” for the top spots in the NFL, but they are good enough and play well enough to make this an interesting season playing in relevant, meaningful games. That’s a step forward!
I try to take a few minutes each day to plan and reflect. This one hit me solidly as I was processing some different situations both professionally and personally.
We’re all “the hero” in our own story. Whether that means we accentuate the positives/overlook the negatives or vice versa, we look at our life through the most readily-accessible lens we have: Our Point-of-View.
Being especially tough on yourself is self-defeating; excuse-making (especially on your own behalf) is no more helpful.
Self-Awareness means that you are honestly measuring yourself. If you are letting yourself get away with less than your best, it is you whom you are harming the most. We only get one life; be sure you are doing your part to make it your best one!

I have 0 sense why anyone wants to be employee 150,000 at Google when they can have massive impact, serious learning and great upside at a startup.

- Alphabet (i.e. Google) leaves a big market
- Google’s relationship with China has been challenging to say the least. Privacy & security concerns conflict with China’s dictates and demands for censorship of things like content and search results. Combined with the appearance that China is more directly favoring its native search engines (like Baidu), it is no surprise that Google is reducing its efforts to target that market.
- Note: It is likely that this action has less to do with Human Rights or other similar topics and is simply a response to the fact that China’s constraints make it less profitable for Google in that market. This is not a judgment; it is simply reality.
- Seven (7) Tips for Local SEO Reporting
- For businesses and organizations focusing on SEO and Content, targeting your efforts based on Location is more important than ever. If you do not expect clients or customers outside a defined area, you are better off focusing your efforts specifically on them. Reporting on your Local SEO efforts is a niche that can pay dividends knowing that we measure those things that matter!

- Google Maps & Augmented Reality
- For those who remember the “Google Glasses”, it is easy to see why that attempt was really just the leading edge of where some of these technologies will eventually manifest. Using Google VPS [Visual Positioning System], it is easy to see how this technology – currently only supported on mobile phones – will eventually come to fruition. Eventually, it will probably not just be Tony Stark getting “heads-up displays” & supportive information overlaid atop his field of vision.
- Note: One important thing to keep in mind if you are fearful of these types of advances is Usability. We can be concerned about how someone might utilize these types of features, but remember that a key component is bringing value to Users.
- If there is a way that it can satisfy a need or enhance an experience, it will eventually be found. Until it does, it’ll be as much of a toy as were those ill-fated “weird Google glasses”!
