When viewed with some cynicism, we are more accurately the product being sold on the platform!

Back Onboard With Mid-Term Predictions

It has been a couple of weeks since I was able to send out an update. #Apologies

Like many of you, time in the Fall comes at a premium! Even with an extra hour with the time change (Ugh!), there is just so much more to do than there is time in the day to do it!

Thankfully, I have got a few minutes to connect as we near Tuesday’s Mid-Term Elections.

My political leanings and worldview are pretty well known. I hold few secrets about where I stand on the issues even if I focus on my other interests in much of my writing.

This update will follow and simply focus on what I see of the environment and landscape as we are now just a couple of days before Election Day.

That said…

The 2022 Mid-Term elections on Tuesday are likely to be a pretty good day for Republicans.

While the Republican outlook wasn’t especially positive as recently as 6-8 weeks ago, Democrats have been battling some tough economic headwinds throughout this election cycle.

  • Inflation and the economy have been front and center for large blocs of voters.
  • Energy policy (manifested in higher gas prices) has been a continuing pain point (affecting voters both directly at the pump and at the checkout registers where they pay for goods they buy).
  • Abortion and other cultural issues are doing very little outside of serving to motivate the already-convinced voters.
  • Dire warnings of “threats to Democracy” are not making headway among enough voters feeling the effects of economic issues.

It truly is another case of James Carville’s famous line – “It’s the economy, stupid!”

Looking at the political landscape (especially campaign spending in advance of Election Day), Democrats are strategically pulling money from what were thought to be toss-up races to shore up and defend allegedly “safe” seats in areas that President Biden won by as much as 7-10 points just two years ago!

Races in states like Georgia and Florida are being near-abandoned to defend races in New York, Oregon, Washington, and California.

With each passing announcement, trends continue to drive the likely outcome closer and closer toward Republican gains. (Note: From my standpoint, individual polling is a wildly inaccurate measure, but it can effectively capture momentum and trends.)

As you now read less than 24 hours before polls begin opening, I suspect that there are really two possible outcomes depending upon just how volatile Election Day voting turns out.

Option 1 - Republicans Take Control of U.S. House

At this point, I expect that this is a near certainty. Unlike previous cycles, early vote numbers this time do not suggest any Election Day deficits that Republicans are going to have to overcome. Democrats lose control of the chamber again (setting the stage for Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s impending retirement after the election). The biggest question remaining is just how many seats will the Republican majority be…which leads us to the other possible option.

Editor’s Note: Looking with the aid of hindsight, this ended up being the outcome, but it was nowhere near certain!

Outcome 2 - Republicans Take Control of U.S. House and U.S. Senate

Depending upon how strongly the outcome turns against Democrats, there seems to be a good likelihood that Republicans could take both chambers. There are some unique problems arising for Democrats in each of the decisive toss-up states, but most of them seem to favor Republicans.

Barring some real surprises on Election night, I’m expecting outcome #2 and a celebratory night for Republicans.

Regardless, keep in mind that on Wednesday morning, the sun will come up! No matter what you hear, most of us will have work to do, families to raise, and bills to pay after this election is over.

What we do after the elections are over influences our futures more strongly than the candidates who win or lose them!

Editor’s Note: Again, with the benefit of hindsight, this was entirely not the case! Regardless of the structural problems (inflation, dissatisfied electorate, etc.), the voting result ended up coming down to candidates. There were limits to what voters would choose and Republicans, in general, chose poorly (and it cost them).

Those who succeed review results and identify opportunities where they have to improve. Until then, we play the cards that are dealt!

Unrelated Sports Mention

  • UGA beat Tennessee 27-13 to remain undefeated and on pace to return to the SEC Championship. Should they finish out the season unbeaten until Atlanta, they are pretty much assured of another appearance in the College Football Playoff trying to repeat as National Champions.
    • Next Up: Mississippi State in the “Battle of the Bulldogs/Bulldawgs”
  • The Falcons lost a tough game to the LA Chargers (that they should have won). They are still competing for 1st place in the NFC South, but that is more a result of bad play by other NFC-S teams than anything the Falcons are doing “right”. As a Falcons fan expecting them to struggle this year, hanging around .500 and being competitive in games was the upper limits of what I expected from the team. We’re getting that so it’s just something to enjoy along the way!

There has been ALOT of noise around Social Media (especially Twitter) over the past 7-10 days. Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform and the subsequent changes are being loudly debated from all sides.

As far as I am concerned, all of this is a direct result of people continuing to overlook this fundamental principle. The audience on a platform is THEIR audience; not yours!

It is simply a mistake to tie your message to a specific platform!

At best, creators of content (that would be us) or consumers of content (that would be the audience) are residents of the platform; we do not own it! When viewed with some cynicism, we are more accurately the product being sold on the platform!

Either way, if you are looking to build an audience, share a message, and influence an outcome, don’t get too embedded in a specific platform over which you have little to no control.

Whether you agree or disagree with charging $8 for a “blue checkmark”, the resulting complaints highlight that too many have forgotten the difference between what you Use versus what you Own!

Don’t let that be you.
