There is a difference between waiting for guidance and moving to higher ground when the water rises!
There is no reason to wait when you already know. Make sure that there is real uncertainty if you are waiting. If not, go ahead and move toward the "dry ground"!

Things That Matter

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, November 14th, 2022.

If there’s one thing that marks predictions, it is that they are often wrong! Be it sports teams, politics, business, or any endeavor we seek to predict, there is rarely complete information and, more often than not, we’re viewing an expected reality through our own unique lens.

Last week, I predicted that the 2022 Mid-terms would turn out pretty well for Republicans taking the House and Senate.

With 19 House seats still up for grabs, Republicans need 7 to get over 218 for control (Democrats would need to win 15). Whether the Senate stays even at 50-50 or Democrats end up building a majority will depend upon Georgia’s second Senate runoff in as many cycles.

First off, I hold to my statements before the votes.

“Regardless, keep in mind that the sun will come up on Wednesday morning! No matter what you hear, most of us will have work to do, families to raise, and bills to pay after this election is over.”

There are plenty of feelings and opinions no matter where you look.

Just know

If you were my friend before Tuesday, you are still today (at least for me). Tuesday’s outcome, how you voted, or why doesn’t change that for me. Frankly, I think we are all stronger listening to and learning from our differences than we are isolating ourselves among groups of shared interests/beliefs.

Secondly, I have found that things are rarely as good (or as bad) as they seem in the moment.

This election cycle was extremely winnable for Republicans. If there is anything that can be learned from it Candidates & Campaigns matter! Good candidates who ran effective campaigns fared well. Candidates destined to win in future elections will do well to learn the lessons from this cycle.

Either way, there is work to do and today is the best day to get to it!

Have a great week & if you’re reading this, it’s my birthday (Nov 14th). You give me a super gift every time just being here. Know that I really appreciate it!

Unrelated Sports Mention

  • UGA defeated Mississippi State in Starkville by a final score of 45-19. This victory sealed their latest SEC East Championship and signed their ticket to Atlanta for another shot at the SEC Championship. There is still work to do next week versus Kentucky before we worry about the post-season. Next Up: Kentucky on the road
There is a difference between waiting for guidance and moving to higher ground when the water rises!

I was in a situation this week where someone shared that they were “waiting on a decision from the higher-ups” to take some action. As we discussed the options, it was fairly clear what decision would occur.

It reminded me of reports in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when New Orleans residents congregated at the Super Dome (a downhill trek from where they were). This was a case where they ignored basic science that Water runs downhill!

In both of these cases, the right options were clear. There was no reason to wait for someone else to give “the go-ahead” for a decision that was already known.

Make sure that there is real uncertainty if you are waiting. If not, go ahead and move toward “dry ground”!

For those checking out the book reviews, I reviewed Twelve And A Half (Amazon affiliate link) by Gary Vaynerchuk. You can check out my notes at this link.

Keep a lookout as I have finished reading the following books and will be posting my notes for those very soon!

  • The ‘Great Resignation’ turning to the ‘Great Remorse’
    • The so-called “Great Resignation” came about during the pandemic. While many workers adapted to remote work, others simply decided to put their existing careers on hold enabling the pursuit of other interests.
    • In many cases, this is turning into a very negative situation as those workers want (or have) to return to the workforce. With few opportunities & contraction in many industries, going back “to the job” is not turning out as easy as it seemed.
    • Situations change & power appears to be equalizing between employers and employees so adapt accordingly!
  • Using Medium for SEO
    • While we should never forget that Medium’s audience belongs to Medium, the opportunity to share your content and value with that audience is not something to ignore.
    • Their audience is large and diverse. There are bound to be members of that audience interested in what you have to share so make sure you don’t ignore the platform.
  • Local SEO Hints
    • Improving Local SEO is a must for businesses/services that operate within a geographical area. A good local strategy should be the foundation of your marketing efforts in the digital realm.
  • SEO Auditing Services
    • Anything worth doing is worth measuring. If you are focusing resources (time and/or money) toward SEO, be sure that you include auditing as a part of your strategy.
    • Identify what is working and what needs to change to continually grow and evolve your model.
