Sirus Digital Newsletter – Edition 115

You have a right to free speech; you do not have a right to a listening audience!
As a creator, the audience belongs to the platform! While they may be "your audience" on the platform, make no mistake - audiences "belong" where they congregate & where their identity is held!

Thankful Is A Choice

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, November 21st, 2022.

Lost between the costumes of Halloween and the shopping of Christmas is a holiday that we do not need to overlook. This week (November 24th) is Thanksgiving Day and will be (I believe) our 233rd celebration since starting in 1789.

We would all do well to take some time this week to reflect on those things for which we are thankful. In our current culture, it is expressly easy to complain. If there is anything that our technology has enabled over the past 10-20 years, it has enabled us to express that (and whom) we don’t like!

Instead of blaming our technology or even blaming those using it, here’s my call for each of us to focus more on what we do have and those things we do like!

Keep in mind that reflecting on blessings and being thankful for them is a primary step toward happiness.

It is very difficult to be mired in depression when we are genuinely thankful for each day God affords us. If we view them as the gift that they are, it is actually hard not to have a smile. With that smile, it becomes easy to brighten the days of those around you.

Want to have a happier life? Be thankful for what you have and approach each day for the opportunity it is for you to grow, improve, and influence those for whom you care.

Enjoy your week and find something each day that is a blessing for you and others!

  • UGA finished off the 2022 SEC season undefeated for the 2nd year in a row. That is a feat only achieved twice before since the SEC split into East & West divisions. Kentucky battled and held the game closer than most games have been this year, but with the win, UGA meets GA Tech next week to potentially cap off their 2nd undefeated regular season in advance of their SEC Championship game against LSU. For now, it’s time to go to work and #WreckTech! The rest of the season will work itself out if Georgia takes care of their business.
  • My Falcons won another close one against the Chicago Bears today (27-24). A late-game FG and subsequent INT sealed Atlanta’s 5th win of the season. At the beginning of the season, playing near .500 ball was a solid goal as the team is currently constructed and they are pretty much on track to achieve that goal. It’s only a plus that they are currently only a 1/2 game back of the division-leading Buccaneers. Since anything can happen when you play hard, we’ll have to see how this ends up!
You have a right to free speech; you do not have a right to a listening audience!

In recent days, we are hearing A LOT about free speech, exposure, message, and audiences. Much of the current discussion centers around Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter and the subsequent changes he is directing at the company/on the platform. Whether it is who should (or shouldn’t) be allowed on the platform or what should (or shouldn’t) be allowed on it or handling of platform features (i.e. “Blue Checkmarks”), we are fundamentally talking more about voices & audiences than anything.

As the leader of the company, Elon Musk has the authority to make whatever changes he sees fit. Some users will undoubtedly benefit; others will likely be negatively impacted.

That said, no one’s “Freedom of Speech” is being limited – unless you count Twitter employees whose employment status could be getting impacted by their public statements about the company.

Realistically, having a platform where someone says something with which I disagree is not damaging to MY rights. I can share my perspectives in the same manner.

Central to many of the complaints is the feeling (by some) that their reach (aka – the audience hearing them) is being impacted. Whether it is “buying” checkmarks (that might offer perceived influence) or allowing certain messages/topics/users, the biggest complaint seems to be that competing ideas might now be heard.

The big thing to remember as a creator is that the audience belongs to the platform! While they may be “your audience” on the platform, make no mistake – audiences “belong” where they congregate & where their identity is held! We may hold their attention momentarily, but we are not the owners of the real estate.

Note: The threatened pivots toward other platforms like Mastadon highlight this.

Just remember

  • Other platforms may not be mature enough to accept a mass migration of users. We’ll see if they can quickly adapt and scale.
  • Other platforms will likely encounter the same problems if users are gravitating to them in order to create their own “echo chambers”. The same challenges will manifest as diverse voices later arrive that hold differing ideals/philosophies.

At its most basic level, we have a right to say what we want; we don’t have a right to expect there will be no consequences; we also don’t have the right to expect others will agree (or even care)!

…we will see…
