Directive Versus Collaborative
Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, August 1st, 2022.
When leading, there are degrees toward behaving in a directive fashion versus doing so in a more collaborative manner. Each has its place and most of us use both – even if we might tend more strongly toward one or the other.
In a fire or flood, there is little need to debate and vote on whether to stay or leave. Directive leadership is best suited when action (not consensus) is paramount. We don’t even have to agree on where to go next; we just need to take action to leave here!
However, in times when information might be dispersed and it is not an emergency situation, a more collaborative approach brings value. A consensus can bring about a better solution than might one individual’s response.
The key is understanding where your stronger tendencies might lie and humility to know where you need help.
Yes, a fully directive approach is almost always quicker. Things move much faster when you do not need to convince. However, just remember that your ability to wisely choose is limited by your knowledge and intuition.
As you stray farther from your experience and expertise, outcomes become more about execution than planning. Often, the results can be more about luck (good or bad) than little else.
Likewise, being more collaborative does offer some shield since it is based on consensus. It is much easier to shift blame onto “the group” than to take accountability as the leader – especially when plans go awry.
Knowing how to lead when is a developed skill. It can be taught in some ways but requires practice and experience to hone.
- What is your tendency?
- Where does it serve you well and where is it a liability?
- How can you better utilize both to make you more effective overall?

We are all on a journey. Being social creatures, many of those journeys intersect with those of others like us.
There is often a lot of worry about “finding one’s self” or “finding our real path”. It is especially challenging for younger people who might not know yet what that is.
If that is where you are (or someone whom your care about is), just keep this in mind. The best way to find a path is to be moving and try different things. Some will be a fit; others will not.
Along the way, we find things that fit and we learn more about ourselves.
Usually, it is along that part of your journey when you are looking for or trying something wholly different that you stumble across something unexpected. It is those moments that unlock new pathways and directions that you might have never considered before.
Keep in mind that our Life is a journey and Happiness is more about finding enjoyment in the trip rather than arriving at any particular destination!

You can be successful without it, but it is usually a result of luck. Data is our key to planning the next move.
