Sirus Digital Newsletter – Edition 71

Don't do what I do; Do what you do!
Duplicating the principles and actions of successful people or those we admire serves as a good starting point for our journey. Mirroring things that already work is time-tested. However, do not overlook the very real requirement that what you do has to be congruent with who you are! That is the best version of you!

Telling Our Own Story

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on November 15th, 2021.

I turned 51 yesterday (Sun. Nov 14th).

In those now 51 years, I have heard many stories and interpretations told by people in their own self-interests. Marketers today have developed the practice of renaming and repackaging things in ways to make them sound “new” or “fresh”.

While ordering popcorn at a movie theatre preparing to watch Clifford: The Big Red Dog with my family (Yes, it was a cute movie), this one was a first for me.

We watched the movie at what I’ll label a “Recliner Theatre”. Most of us have been to one where they also take orders and bring it to your seat.

Our server asked us if we wanted “Butter or No” on our Popcorn, but was quick to mention that it was “plant-based Butter offered due to dairy allergies from which many people suffer”.

It sounded very compassionate and specialty.

After he walked away, my wife quisically asked: “Plant-based Butter??”

I responded: “Sure….MARGARINE!!”

Kudos to the Recliner Theater for giving us the 2021 live version of the old “It’s not Butter, it’s……..PARKAY!” commercial.

Hopefully, this will put an early smile on your face as you start the week!

Sports Nugget

UGA finished their SEC season undefeated with to regular season non-conference games remaining after their 41-17 victory over Tennessee at Neyland Stadium. It was strange to me that the Volunteers would schedule Georgia as their HOMECOMING opponent, but I suppose that enabled them to get all of the celebrating before the actual game started! 🙂

As for my Falcons, they did next to nothing in their big loss to the Cowboys today. I predicted early in the season that they would be around a .500 team during this year’s rebuild and that looks to likely remain the case.

Don't do what I do; Do what you do!

In addition to Nov 14th being my birthday, it is also Gary Vaynerchuk’s (of whom, most of you know, I am a fan).

I keep this idea in mind often because we all fall victim to seeing someone else and trying to mirror them.

It makes total sense based on the ideas we’ve gotten over the years from material like Think and Grow Rich (Napolean Hill) or Anthony Robbins seminars & books. Fundamentally, we’ve always hear to “find people who have what you want, do what they do, and you’ll get what they have”.

While that sets a good foundational principle, it does ignore the very real requirement that what I do has to be congruent with who I am!

We are truly the best version of Us and for there to be long term satisfaction & happiness, we have to take what we learn adapting it to our unique incarnation.

Doing otherwise can produce some successes, but there’s no fun in being something that you’re not!

I’m going to be me! You be you! We’ll all be happier for it!

For those checking out the book reviews, I reviewed E-Myth Revisited (Amazon affiliate link) by Michael Gerber. You can check out my notes at this link.

Keep a lookout as I have finished reading the following books and will be posting my notes for those very soon!

Today’s links are predominately focused on Reputation Management. I’ll be posting a long-form article on the subject soon, but in advance of that, be sure to check out some of this reference material on the subject. Remember, Reputation Management is a bigger topic than just “Getting Reviews” (even though this is an important aspect of it). Fundamentally, it is what your targeted audience (and potential customers) see and feel about you & your brand as they are making decisions.

With the ease of finding information today, taking an active role in ensuring that the findable information about you, your company, and your brand communicates your intended message is important!

Let me know if you’d like to discuss your options between having in-house staff versus an agency handling this on your behalf. If there is a way we can help (either strategically or from an implementation standpoint), we’d love to chat with you.
