Sirus Digital Newsletter – Edition 83

If you don't ask, it's already 'No'. Find your 'Yes'.
It is tough for us to recognize in the moment, but rejection is almost always just temporary. The answer may be 'No' in some cases, but it is certainly not in all. If in a single case, it may just be 'Not Now'. Try to remember that few things are forever - even 'No'.

Shouting Across A Chasm

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on February 7th, 2022.

It is disappointing to watch groups shout and fight across a gulf that neither seems willing to recognize or cross.

In just the recent days, this situation has played out in Georgia with gubernatorial candidates visiting schools. The echo chambers seem to have been on active alert.

Current Governor Kemp visited an innovation-based school in Forsyth County; candidate Stacy Abrams visited an elementary school in Dekalb County.

What made these visits important?

  • Apparently, the newsworthy element of Kemp’s visit was Forsyth County’s recent removal of books due to content deemed objectionable.
  • Likewise, Abrams’ visit was more about mask requirements, who does/doesn’t follow them, and how is most hypocritical based on their stances.

Overlooked were that each of the visits was made within their enclave of support. The Republican visited one of the “reddest” areas while his Democrat counterpart chose its “bluest”.

If there is something to be learned, it is that it is becoming more and more difficult for leaders to represent all of their constituents. Even more troubling is a growing realization that many are no longer even trying!

Newsworthy would have been Kemp visiting a place where many of those he encountered did not vote for him. It would have been Abrams talking to an audience where she is likely to have minimal support. In each, the candidates could have spoken to and heard from people with whom they may disagree, but whom they ultimately seek to represent.

So in reality…

  • A Governor really has no place telling a local school district what books are appropriate for their students.
  • A Candidate owes no apologies to people opposed to masking mandates when she chooses not to wear one. (Note: If supporters of mask mandates wish to address that with her, so be it, but it is silly for those against them to have quarrels with her when she chooses not to wear one!)

It is high time for our leaders to begin realizing that they are OUR leaders and that group inevitably includes those with whom they agree and those with whom they do not. There is frankly a lot of work that needs to be done and the petty gamesmanship at today’s forefront serves no one.

Let’s do better!
If you don't ask, it's already 'No'. Find your 'Yes'.

Too many of us have a fear of ‘No’.

For those who overcome that fear, it seems as if they realize that rejection is often only temporary. A ‘No’ may be permanent, but that does not mean that all asks will result in ‘No’.

I cannot claim to have totally overcome my discomfort with ‘No’, but thinking of my asks in this context has helped me immensely!

Keep this in mind the next time you ask for something. Try to remember that few things are forever.

In most situations, a different ask or the same ask at a different time can lead to very different outcomes.

For those checking out the book reviews, I reviewed Twelve And A Half (Amazon affiliate link) by Gary Vaynerchuk. You can check out my notes at this link.

Keep a lookout as I have finished reading the following books and will be posting my notes for those very soon!

Eight Link-building Tips
Building links within your content and to it from other authoritative sources has grown into an important topic within SEO. Search Engines include both as ranking factors evaluating the importance and value of your content. While there are services that can assist, even those who “hire it done” need an understanding of the topic.

More WordPress vulnerabilities
As weaknesses and attack vectors get identified in the WP environment, I try to share them. In this case, it is a dual exposure for my website built on WordPress utilizing Elementor.

  • If you use either, be sure to update your site and plug-ins!
  • If you do not have a strategy and plan for keeping your website up-to-date, use this as your reason to create one!

Google Workspace (AKA GSuite) goes team
Google has announced the ability for groups to utilize Google Workspace (formerly GSuite) in a team environment. Some label it “shadow IT”, but for smaller organizations and groups who wish to collaborate, it is an option for consideration (especially since it also includes Google Meet & Google Spaces). Note: With this announcement, users can register under their existing email (which eliminates the former requirement for GMail address to participate).

Warning from NFT Collector
It is interesting to view the growth of NFTs (and the buzz around them) within the context of other technology-enabled changes we have seen in recent years. To users who made phone calls on flip phones or marketed via emails at the height of QVC or owned separate devices for recording pictures, audio, and video, it should not be hard to envision that something else would spawn or evolve. As with all of those advancements, this one will grow from its current infancy (and will ultimately become something that most of us cannot imagine today). We must simply be aware of the risks that go along with the potential rewards because uncertainty is the only certainty at this point.

While this post on our website is focused specifically on Bankruptcy Attorneys, the ideas are relevant across a number of legal (and non-legal) verticals. Be sure to check it out.
