An ant on the move does more than a dozing ox.
In the Western world, we were taught the parable of the Ant and the Grasshopper. For us, the message was based on how much each did or did not achieve. To Lao's Eastern viewpoint, he highlights the work itself as opposed to the accomplishment.

Decisions And Consequences

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on February 28th, 2022.

The world has watched this week as Russia attacked its neighbor Ukraine. It should not be a big surprise as many countries have bad leaders – elected or having taken power with violence.

We’re looking on as leaders try to find peaceful outcomes in situations involving unpeaceful people.

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream infamously tweeted earlier this month:

You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war.

We call on President Biden to de-escalate tensions and work for peace rather than prepare for war.

Sending thousands more US troops to Europe in response to Russia’s threats against Ukraine only fans the flames of war.

Respectfully, they should stick to making ice cream because their understanding of foreign policy is progressive nonsense!

I did not vote for President Biden. I pray for him that he will be granted wisdom in a very difficult job. Watching his decisions these first 13 months, he badly needs it!

Make no mistake. Much of the economic and foreign policy challenges that we have faced (and continue to face) can be traced directly back to some very poor decisions. They frankly deal with his disastrous energy policy (or lack thereof) that was immediately put in place stopping work on the KeystoneXL pipeline, relaxing Russia’s own Nord Stream 2, and introducing new restrictions on U.S. energy production making us more dependent upon foreign sources.

The initial negative result of these actions has been the increased inflation seen across America that has worsened an already bad problem of our supply chains hindered by lagging effects of Covid19. It takes little analysis to see that energy costs and transportation costs have been driving factors in our inflationary pressures across industries outside Energy and Gas.

In strokes of honesty that many voters ignored (or overlooked), President Biden told us that energy costs would rise when he was elected. Sadly, many Americans seem now surprised to learn the downstream impacts that this reality causes.

Now, we see a restart to Russian aggression against its neighbors that had not been seen since the Obama presidency. It is simply a fact that America limiting its energy independence empowers and emboldens the world’s worst actors. The increased oil and gas revenues grant them resources to fund their expansionist goals. Combined with American leaders seeming to lack resolve, it fosters a repetitive pattern.

History tells us that we cannot ignore or “hope for peace” in dealing with individuals who do not want peace. Much to Ben & Jerry’s chagrin, being nice doesn’t motivate bad people to do good things.

If anything, appeasement of bullies (or demanding calm while watching them bully others) just emboldens them to continue their behavior. It is absolute historically-proven nonsense to claim that you “cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war”.

I will continue praying for him and America. Both need it.

P.S. No “Unrelated Sports Mention” this week. I might go back and re-watch the UGA / Alabama National Championship Game. Let me know if you’d like to wager on the game. *wink*

An ant on the move does more than a dozing ox.

It is often entertaining to see quotes that originated in another language. The visuals reference scale and perspective in ways that we might not typically use, but the message is just as direct.

In this one, Lao Tzu uses animals for comparison. One could almost envision this as an ABC After School Special cartoon much like the ones some of us remember.

Who can still sing the “I’m just a Bill” jingle?

Similarly, it is certain that something so small as an ant (moving and taking action) accomplishes more than another bigger and stronger at rest!

In the Western world, we were taught the parable of the Ant and the Grasshopper. For us, the message was based on how much each did or did not achieve.

To Lao’s Eastern viewpoint, he highlights the work itself as opposed to the accomplishment.

Regardless of how you view it, action is preferable to stasis. Whether you focus on the work itself or the accomplishments it produces, things move when energy is expended to move them.

It does not matter if it is a lazy Grasshopper or a sleeping Ox. The industrious Ant wins!

Paid Search Ads or SEO: Which is better for Attorneys
I just posted this article comparing Paid Ads (specifically Paid Search Ads) to SEO for legal offices. Determining which one is “better” depends upon each office’s specific situation, but each offers benefits. A good marketing strategy for law practices should consider both and find their best mix.

Local SEO Hints for Franchises
While the vast majority of businesses in markets with which we work are not franchises, some readers do own them. Local SEO (because of its close nature with location and service areas) is often something that local franchisees can manage better than expecting it from their regional or national franchisors. This article shares some hints if you fall into that category.

Note: Even if you are not a franchisee, learning good Local SEO practices is a valuable exercise for increasing your presence and awareness to audiences in your service area!

Google Ads latency issues in advertiser console
Google has confirmed the issue and, if you use Paid Search Ads in Google, you want to keep an eye on this. Latency can be a frustrating problem for users and ultimately impacts how effective we can be. Keep an eye toward performance for all of the tools that you use because that can lead to big impacts on what you (and your team) are able to get done.

While this post on our website is focused specifically on Bankruptcy Attorneys, the ideas are relevant across a number of legal (and non-legal) verticals. Be sure to check it out.
