Sirus Digital Newsletter – Edition 95

Nerves are for the unprepared.
Today, the smallest margins separate those who succeed and those who do not. The greatest successes come to those who process and curate information the best (and prepare for different circumstances). They are the ones most ready when "the lights come on".

On Drafts, Leaks, And Responses

Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, May 9th, 2022.

While this week specifically will not likely be remembered historically, it will probably serve as the cultural launch point for an upcoming decision that might be historic.

Politico broke the story this week of a leaked draft Supreme Court decision (written by Justice Alito) that, if accurate, will overturn the 1973 Roe vs Wade decision establishing a constitutional right to Abortion.

Regardless of whether you support or oppose abortions, in general, or the right to choose to have one, there are two eventualities that are guaranteed to occur:

  • The legality and governance of abortion will be a matter determined by each state’s laws.
  • Local and state races will become more important (and more contentious) than they were before.

I understand that there are differences on both sides of this debate and, as far as I am concerned, we can and should address them as adults. Regardless of which side you may find yourself in, you need not worry about me protesting outside your home or picking fights with you generically on social media.

The reality is that there are very few (if any) people whose motivation is to “kill babies” or “control women”. Entering this debate so poorly projecting the opposing side will do nothing to calm the conflict & quell the chaos.

For what it is worth, I have felt that it should be a state-by-state decision throughout. There are few greater examples recently of a decision that should’ve been left to the Tenth Amendment to our Constitution than this (paraphrase: “Power not granted to the Federal Government are reserved to the States”).

Note: Honestly, it is my opinion that there are a number of other areas where we, as a nation, would benefit by properly reserving a question to state legislatures!

With all that said, those who were my friends before this leak/decision are still my friends today. If we happen to feel differently about it, know that I respect your feelings. If you would like to discuss it, I am more than welcome. If you would rather we talk more about the multitude of things that we share (instead of obsessing about something where we do not), that is super too!

In the end, it is my belief that even in the face of these moments, there are still many more things that we share than separate us. If we allow it to do so (or allow others outside our circles to use dissension for their own ends), we will all be worse off for it.

You know my email (david_at_sirusdigital.com). Always happy to hear from you!

Thanks for being out there!!

Nerves are for the unprepared.

As I was reading about the Atlanta Falcons’ draft picks selected in the recently-completed NFL Draft, I saw this quote shared by their rookie QB, Desmond Ritter. While Ritter attributes that quote (or sentiment) to one of his high school coaches, it follows the mentality that he’s approached his entire career.

It is another well-quoted idea that “Luck is where Preparation meets Opportunity”.

Looking at the environment and culture in which we live, I think this might be more relevant today than it might have been in the past.

While it often looks like there is a wide divide between levels of achievement, there are possibly the smallest margins separating those who succeed and those who do not. In an environment where knowledge is most freely-available, it is those who process and curate it the best (and prepare for different circumstances) that are most ready when “the lights come on”.

It’s true that a big part of winning (in business as well as sports) is showing up. It is your preparation that makes the difference.

  • Is there something on the horizon for which you need to be learning or practicing?
  • How can you best make yourself ready when your moment comes?

For those checking out the book reviews, I reviewed Twelve And A Half (Amazon affiliate link) by Gary Vaynerchuk. You can check out my notes at this link.

Keep a lookout as I have finished reading the following books and will be posting my notes for those very soon!
