Outdoors Again - Part Trois
Editor’s Note: This newsletter was originally published on Monday, May 23rd, 2022.
(No, I don’t know French! I had to Google it. Imagine my surprise to find out that Trois is not just a character from Star Trek – Next Generation! #WhoWouldThunkIt)
Most of you know that I serve as an Adult Leader for my Sons’ Scouts BSA troop. After a couple of years of hiatus after my oldest turned 18, I am back involved with my youngest who is just starting.
This week marked my third camping trip in as many months. Additionally, I am scheduled for a week-long Summer Camp that will start in two weeks!
[Editor’s Note: Our June 6th edition will be written & scheduled before we leave. That will be Edition #99 with NUMBER 100 scheduled to come out the Monday after we return home! Be on the lookout as I am already thinking of some ways we can celebrate the milestone.]
This past weekend, our trip visited a Civil War re-enactment in Resaca, GA.
As much as it was hot watching the re-enactment on the field, it is not overlooked how hot it was for the re-enactors who were wearing period-accurate clothing (largely dark, wool uniforms; many with coats) carrying gear as Civil War soldiers would have carried.
As difficult as it was for the re-enactors, it makes you respect those who actually fought in these battles!
Even re-enacting, all of the participants went home to their families. Few experienced discomforts beyond sunburn or heat exhaustion or dehydration. Injuries were likely minimal.
This was a gathering of friends and comrades remembering and showing respect to ancestors whose cost of participation was much greater!
According to one of the re-enactors, the regiment whom his team represents joined the battle in the early 1860s. They started with over 1200 men. By the end of the war, less than 120 returned home!
The opportunity for our kids to get some minimal glimpse of what life was like for others in another time is invaluable!
It was worth whatever little bit of sweat and discomfort I “endured”!
In a couple of weeks, I’ll happily do it again!
Have a great week!

P.S. As I mentioned, we are quickly approaching Edition 100 of this newsletter. I appreciate those of you who have been here from the beginning as well as those who are newly arriving. It truly means more than you know!

It was a super-interesting case to dig into. If you're interested in Google Discover, Google News, etc., then you should check out my case study covering @rustybrick's new blog covering Lucid Air (and its incredibly-fast entry into Discover). https://t.co/BOer72BFuU

It is amazing that we are still debating over this simple reality! Whether it is Facebook’s sale of user insights or Twitter’s editorial decision making or Instagram’s influencer dominance, it is the Users (and what they do with the product or platform) that represent the goldmine!
I recorded a YouTube vlog in 2018 that made this very point. It is still as applicable today as it was before.
Our digital world proliferates “free” tools and platforms. Our Inboxes and Spam-boxes are filled with trial offers, subscriptions, and other usage events at a lower cost.
Feel free to utilize them if you wish, but do not feign surprise when their profit-motive (upgrade, escalator, etc) takes effect.
We (specifically our data or our habits or thought patterns) are some of the most valuable resources! The more similar you are to a company’s intended target market; the more valuable these insights are for you.
Just be sure that you are getting value in return for the insights you share!
